Pending school board approval, Warsaw Community High School is pleased to announce Scott Smith as its new girls wrestling coach. Smith brings more than 30 years of experience in education and 24 years of high school wrestling coaching experience to the position. Smith has a proven record of building competitive programs, developing student-athletes, and creating a positive team culture. His coaching philosophy emphasizes discipline, accountability, academic success, sportsmanship, and individual athlete development. “Coach Smith brings a wealth of wrestling knowledge and leadership experience to our program,” WCHS Athletic Director Matt Binkerd says. “His commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the mat aligns extremely well with the values of Warsaw Community Schools and Warsaw Athletics.” Smith previously served as the Head Wrestling Coach at Tippecanoe Valley High School, where he directed all aspects of the high school wrestling program for 20 seasons. His responsibilities included practices, conditioning, scheduling, postseason preparation, staffing, and program operations. During his tenure, he recruited and retained student-athletes while developing strong connections between the high school and youth wrestling programs. He also served as an Assistant Wrestling Coach at Tippecanoe Valley High School from 2015–2018 and as an Assistant Wrestling Coach at Warsaw Community High School from 2018–2019. In those roles, Smith assisted with technical instruction, conditioning, match preparation, and individualized athlete development while helping prepare wrestlers for conference, sectional, regional, and state competition. Smith's leadership extends beyond competition. Throughout his coaching career, he has emphasized building relationships with student-athletes, parents, administrators, coaches, and community members while promoting academic accountability, leadership, and sportsmanship. “I am excited about the opportunity to continue serving student-athletes and contributing to the Warsaw wrestling program,” said Smith. “My goal is to help create a positive, competitive, and inclusive environment where student-athletes can grow on the mat, in the classroom, and in life.” With extensive experience in both coaching and education, Smith is committed to building a wrestling culture centered on hard work, character, accountability, teamwork, and the development of the whole student-athlete.
